Old and New Friends – My Christmas Cards and Connecting

Christmas is Wonderful!

One of the best parts of helping people buy and sell houses in Fayetteville, NC is that I have made so many new friends as a result of my business!

I’ll confess that by nature, I’m a pretty shy person. That creates a problem because I’m also very social–I love to be with my friends. Being a real estate agent in Fayetteville has gone a long way towards helping me solve my problem. I’ve made so many new friends and I’m thankful for each one!

Christmas is such a great opportunity to spend time and connect with the people in our lives. I love the get-togethers, phone calls, or even emails and Facebook messages from all my family and friends, as we catch up with each other and pray for God’s favor over the next year. And, I really enjoy getting Christmas cards and putting them all around my house during the holidays! They end up everywhere–on the fireplace mantle, on the secretary, on the island, etc–and they become part of my decorations. I’m sure it’s the same with you.

But, I love to send out beautiful Christmas cards, too. In the past, I’ve usually ordered my cards from Joni Eareckson Tada; I love her work, her ministry and her messages.

This year, though, I had the opportunity to order some handmade cards to send to my friends, and at the same time, re-connect with someone from earlier in my life. The story is pretty simple, but it’s one that I view as a real blessing in my life in the past year.

I friended Cazzie on Facebook some time over the last year or two. We’d known each other during our college days, but not had any contact since then (quite a few years ago!) On Facebook, we had routine contact, the kind you would expect from acquaintances who hadn’t been involved in each others’ lives in the last 15 years or so. But at some point, Cazzie posted that she had developed a real interest in scrapbooking and graphic art work. At about the same time, I had helped a couple of my clients sell their homes in Fayetteville, homes they were pretty attached to after having lived in them for so many years.

I thought that giving my clients scrapbooks of their homes would be a great idea; scrapbooks would help them keep the many memories of their homes and their time in Fayetteville as lasting ones. So, I asked Cazzie if she could do them, and she did.

They were beautiful! My clients were so pleased with them, and I was very impressed at how creative and artistic Cazzie was. I thought these were some of the best gifts I could ever have given.

Well, sometime after that, I asked Cazzie if she could make Christmas cards for me–I love the thought of handmade cards and thought they were a way to show my friends they are special to me. She said “yes” and then she created some of the most beautiful cards I could have hoped for!

Christmas Lasts All Year

It truly is amazing! Each one of these cards is different–no two are alike–and she made 225 of them for me! They are gorgeous, and when I opened the box and sat down on the living room floor to address them, it took me two evenings to get it done! I was so impressed I had to stop and look at each one, read it, and check out the colors, the ribbons and the little trinkets she put on each of them. It’s funny, as I was addressing them, I thought to myself, “I wish I could send this one to me!”

I really am happy that my friends and clients are getting a special card this year. I hope they are as impressed with them as I am, and that the cards get put all around my friends’ houses and become part of the decorations. And, I’m so happy I got to establish a friendship this year with Cazzie.

Cookies With Santa in Fayetteville NC

Santa was in Fayetteville NC yesterday! Did you see him?

Cookies with Santa

On December 4th, The Julissa Jumper Real Estate Team hosted our first annual “Cookies with Santa” event for all of our clients and friends and their children.

We had a great time!

The day started with set up and decorating, and at about 12:00, Santa arrived. The children started coming shortly after, and Santa took pictures with each child, gave them a small gift and then the children got to play with their toys, color and share cookies, hot chocolate and spiced cider.

They were all very excited, but as you might expect, quite a few of them became suddenly “shy” when it came time to climb onto the Big Guy’s lap. Still, Santa knows how to deal with children, and he had them all relaxed and smiling for their photos in no time. He did a great job! But, some of the children tested his ability to think fast. The two hardest questions: “I didn’t see it in the parking lot, where did you park your sleigh?” and “You’re supposed to be at the parade at 3:00, how can you be there if you’re here?” Turns out the sleigh was up on the roof of the 4 story building, that’s why you couldn’t see it, and yes, Santa had plenty of time to fly in his sleigh from this event to the parade.

We plan to make this an annual event, and are already looking forward to next year! But, we aren’t going to wait that long to do more–we are planning a “Spring Fling” around Easter time, an ice cream social in the summer, and a hayride for the fall!

We’ll get your invitations early enough for all to plan ahead! Mark your calendars and please plan to join us. We have discovered a great way to spend time with clients, friends and their families, and are excited about what the New Year will bring.

Fayetteville Homes for Sale: A Home for a Hero

I’ll just say this right up front, so you know where I’m coming from. Like everybody I know here in Fayetteville, NC, I’m a patriot, and I get pretty emotional when I see what our soldiers have given to our nation, and us all.

Here’s a story about one, and the woman who loves him.

Two days ago, I was making a late dinner, and my phone rang. A very sweet sounding lady asked me about the 4 bedroom home I have listed for sale in Roundtree, a quiet neighborhood right outside the gate to Fort Bragg. She and her husband were sitting outside it, and wondered about the floor plan and what the price was. (Just a note to sellers–this is why a sign in the yard is a GOOD thing!)

They couldn’t stay for me to drive over, so I told them to visit my website and look at the photo gallery and video I have there. We made an appointment for yesterday afternoon to look inside.

I knew this buyer and I would get along well. We’d lapsed into our native Spanish while we were talking on the phone, and I’d discovered that her husband was originally from Argentina and she, from Venezuela. Fayetteville is a very diverse town–the military brings people here from all over the world. I could also tell from our conversations that she was a salt-of-the-earth type. She sounded much like me, and it was pretty clear she was not putting on any airs.

When we met at the house, I’ll confess, I was not prepared for what happened next.

I shook hands with both the husband and wife (well, the wife and I exchanged hugs–we already knew we liked each other) and I opened the door to show them the house. They looked around, slowly, because the husband walks with a cane and a pretty pronounced limp. Then, as they asked me questions about the details of the house, it became apparent that this man had also suffered another pretty devastating injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI.

Oh, my throat got that painful lump, and my eyes started filling up!

So many of our soldiers are coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan with TBI. The blast from the countless IEDs that the enemy uses as booby-traps is devastating, and if the explosion doesn’t kill a soldier, the shock wave from the blast injures their brains, damage far greater than the terrible injuries that professional football players and race car drivers experience. The effect of TBI is dramatic. Speech, movement and thought are all impacted.

Pretending I needed to make a phone call, I excused myself for a minute while they continued looking around so I could get a handle on my emotions. When I walked back, I asked them what they thought.

She liked the open floor plan. “It’s really nice,” she said, “but the kids bedrooms might be a little small.” She liked it, I could tell, but like every woman I know, she still had in mind the “perfect” house and she hadn’t found it yet. “Maybe we should look at a few more.”

His speech was soft and difficult. “We’ve looked at enough houses already. This is a great house,” he struggled to say. “Let’s buy it–I’m really tired and I don’t want to look any more.”

And then I watched her as she dealt with that statement, and I was so proud of her and how clear the love for him was in her eyes. I saw her defenses go down and her eyes light up.

“Let’s meet at 4:00 after we pick up our son to write the offer,” she said.

And, so we did.

My new clients are getting a great house, in a great neighborhood, that is just outside the gate to Fort Bragg.

That’s the place where our heroes work, and the heroes who also sit and wait and heal them when they come home.

Paying it Back (Thanks, Mike Mueller; et.al.!)

You know that tired, old excuse, “I was too busy…, …too much to do, …life happens.” It’s just that, an excuse, and unless we choose to act, it very often gets the better of us. So, I was reminded this morning that I owe a debt to some people who have been great resources for me, and I determined to not let another day go by without saying “thanks.”There are lots of different ways to show on-line appreciation, “friend”, “follow”, “RT”, “link love”, etc. But I think that every once in a while, it’s best to showcase someone who you know is doing good work. Google-juice is great, but who doesn’t like to see their name in the paper!

So, here’s a Tuesday cup of joe and some mega-props to Mike Mueller and the Mueller Map mashup.

I first stumbled across Mike when he was doing mortgage stuff and when he won the My Tech Opinon Video Blog Contest. I already followed him on Twitter and enjoyed his ideas for using video in creative ways.

Then one day he announced a contest on his own website to win a Mueller Map.

When I checked it out, I knew I wanted one–even if I had to buy it (cheap at twice the price!) His mashup was just what my husband and I had been planning for my website. We’d seen on-line tutorials for building one, but being owners of 2 businesses, pretty basic hackers, and eight months pregnant, we knew we just wouldn’t get it done. So, I entered Mike’s contest, and based on my raw talent and intelligence (I clicked the “Friend Me” button on his Facebook page) I won! Mike created a Mueller Map for me, sent it to me, and waited patiently until I delivered my baby and finally made the time to add it to my website.

I love it! Oh, I know I have so much more to do to get it right, but for a broker who is trying to transition from a template site to one that reflects me and who is intent on adding relevant content to my site, this map is ideal. The finished product will be substantial–a map for my listings, a map to showcase neighborhoods, a map to highlight significant community features. There’s no end of good ideas and ways to use this mashup!

So, thanks, Mike for a little piece of code that makes a real, practical difference to me as a real estate broker selling houses in Fayetteville, NC. Now, I just have to find the time to get all those videos done!

P.S. And, Speaking of My Tech Opinion… This site was the first one I added to my RSS reader. I found that, more than almost any other site about real estate marketing, this one had usable, practical information that applied directly to me as an individual broker trying to build a business. Lots of tips on using video, social media and my blog to market effectively without resorting to traditional pay-per-click or in our face marketing. It also doesn’t hurt that Reggie and Nicole Nicolay write very well–their content is always engaging. Lastly, I really appreciate that they avoid the hyperbole that many bloggers resort to when they’re writing about a product or service. It’s nice to get the straight scoop, not ad copy. So, thank to you, too, My Tech Opinion, for helping me figure it all out.
